by Derek Curtis

The Justice Café speaker series invites you to a talk by Leon Ford on Wednesday, December 8 at 7pm in the Underwood Room.

The first speaker in the Justice Café speaker series is Leon Ford - author, activist, mental health ambassador, and advocate for social change. Ford will draw from personal experience when discussing restorative justice and community activism on Wednesday, December 8, at 7 p.m. in the Underwood Room.

Born on March 16, 1993, Ford was 19 years old when his life drastically changed. In a case of mistaken identity, a police officer shot Ford five times during a traffic stop, leaving him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ford has demonstrated incredible strength, wisdom, and faith by devoting his life to improving his community, including becoming a 2019 City Council candidate for Pittsburgh, PA District 9.

As a leader in change, Ford has worked to educate communities and police officers on building healthy relationships. He has collaborated with police to improve cultural competency and work on reform; worked with legislators to modify use of force laws; and currently conducts trainings in community healing, social justice, and empowerment. He has participated on U.S. and BBC television and radio programs, TEDx presentations, and a panel discussion with President Obama, Bryan Stevenson, and the late Senator John Lewis.

Ford has received several awards: President Obama’s Volunteer Service Award in 2017, The Root 100 award in 2018, and Pittsburgh’s 40 Under 40 in 2019.

This event is sponsored by the Community and Multicultural Development Office, the Student Accessibility Services and Academic Skills Center, and the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library.
