James Justicz: Low-Carbon Airplanes

Challenging existing aerospace designs

I will be researching aerodynamics, alternative fuels, and carbon emissions in order to design a more sustainable solution to commercial aviation. Currently, the commercial aviation industry is responsible for about 2% of the entire world's carbon emissions. Planes are much less fuel-efficient during the takeoff phase, and sometimes during the landing stage as well if difficult weather conditions persist, which is quite often. Regional flights are the most frequent in the world and also are by far the least fuel-efficient as they spend little to no time at their cruising altitude (the most efficient phase of flight). I am designing my own concept for a feasible, eco-friendly regional jet that will cut aviation's total emissions in half (whether through alternative fuels or electricity or a combination of the two).
