Skylar Xu: Gentrification of Cities

Our urban future is a shifting paradigm

According to an UN report, 68% of the world's population is projected to live in urban areas by 2050. After the industrial revolution, another revolution is shaping our urban future--our cities are becoming Smart Cities. Consisting of widespread applications based on the 5G network, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and blockchain, smart city technology brings more than just increased efficiency in city living. Enhanced accessibility, quality of living and incentivized democratic community-building are also in the picture, which moves beyond current urban settings as urbanization and urban sprawl gradually take over more and more suburban and rural areas. Less time on the road, more connected communities and radically different business models are only some of the things in our foreseeable urban future. By observing the lifestyle changes these new technologies entail, this project explores sociological implications of city life engaging with this tech and innovation-driven urban future full of promise.
